Prototype
In collaboration with staff from Mann Library and Olin Library, IRIS began with a demonstration prototype website to evaluate the potential for creation and use of a historic electronic aerial photographic data base. The Tompkins County collection is extensive and was selected for the prototype because of interest within the Cornell community. The project began with 618 images of Tompkins County that included 1936, 1938, 1954, 1964, 1980, and 1991. This collection provides an opportunity to explore and research the rich history of Central New York and the Finger Lakes Region. Testing of the prototype was successful to the extent it demonstrated the feasibility of creating a digital data base that could be served to users via a website.
Subsequently, a proposal was successfully submitted for a University Library Grant that ultimately enabled development of a new, enhanced web interface to be served out of Olin Library. The grant further provided for the addition of a three year sequence for Cayuga, Cortland and Wayne Counties.
As resources become available, the electronic aerial photographic library will be expanded.
